Cleft lip causes India - Story of Isha Mahajan - Mission Smile

Cleft lip causes India critical deformities in the children. The need for its solution is also growing consistently.

A smile is a curve that sets everything straight!

Who would know this better than MISSION SMILE? They have provided FREE life-changing cleft care and surgeries.

What an emotional & enriching experience in August 2017 for me! Words cannot explain how lucky I feel to have spent time with Mission Smile. I joined them as a Volunteer in the Kolkata International Mission.

Cleft lip causes in India critical deformities in children. The need for its solution is also growing consistently.

Initial screening day was much more than just medical screening. The work involved gathering all kinds of information. It was also about educating and informing patients and their families that cleft is curable through surgery. I felt disturbed to see that there are still superstitions about the clefts’ causes. Initially, I took a few children through the entire screening process. We had to go through different counters like Registration, check-ups by Surgeons, Dentists, Anaesthetists, Paediatricians, Speech Therapists, Laboratory for blood tests etc.

The experts trained me to assist them in various departments (Pre-operative, Child life and Post-operative). They made the experience comfortable for everyone – patients, families, doctors and the management.  I have carried back many fond memories of children I got emotionally attached to, be it Mampi, Aarav, Soumojit or others. It was a pleasurable moment to see these children experiencing a life-changing event. They further spread smiles on their families and friends’ faces.

Besides the above, I cannot resist saying what a fantastic team Mission Smile has. They are relentlessly working with warmth every day.

My above experience motivated and encouraged me to place Mission Smile on the Global Giving Platform for better visibility to international donors. This I did after coming back from Kolkata.

With so much required to be done for the world, I would certainly want to be associated with the cause in one way or the other. Also, I shall act as a conduit to spread humanity’s message to our generation. In fact, I shall encourage them to participate in such causes, etc., to enable the world to become a better place to live in.

With Mission Smile always…..

Isha Mahajan.
