Our first encounter with Mamun Mondal was during one of our pre-screening camps earlier in 2018. He is from village Malidah in Bagdah, North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. Nine years, ten months old Mamun was like any other boy of his age. The only difference being Mamun had been a victim of both cleft lip and cleft palate from birth. The little boy was operated on his cleft lip when he was just six months old. However, his family’s superstitions and ignorance hold them back from conducting the cleft palate surgery. This left the boy deprived and dejected.
Much like his two older siblings, Mamun too was admitted to a school where he now studies at class IV. Due to his palate deformity, he faced difficulty in speaking since birth. His speech was almost 90% unclear, and hence he couldn’t socialise freely with his classmates without feeling ashamed. While talking to his parents, Majnu Mondal (father) and Rakhima Mondal (mother), we came to know that they rarely allowed the boy to socialize with others. Thus, the little boy had suffered from depression. There was a gradual deterioration in his academic grades.
Our specialist immediately screened him and scheduled him for surgery after being brought to our Kolkata Comprehensive Cleft Care Centre (KC4). He underwent cleft palate surgery on 3rd April 2018. Post recovery, he was given free speech therapy by our therapist volunteer. Mamun will indeed embrace life in all its fullness in the coming days. Thanks to the donors whose contributions help us support the costly surgery and therapies we offer free of cost to needy children like Mamun.
